Springfield, MO – Springfield’s First Annual Veterinarians Day parade took place on Saturday and was attended by several people and non-humans to show their support for the profession.

The 1.5-mile route, which started at Grand Street and South Avenue, was lined by companion animals, livestock, zoo animals and other vets. Duane Dolittle, a vet specializing in equine medicine in Bois D’Arc, MO, served as the grand marshal.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, most vets are go largely unrecognized in most communities. “I think it’s just dandy that we have something like this parade that honors our vets,” said Dolittle.

During the parade, dogs, cats, horses, cows, reptiles, parrots, cockatoos, ferrets, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus were in fine spirits having been showered with treats from passing floats. Such floats included giant syringes, huge gloved hands and a variety of oversized chew toys.

“I didn’t know there was this many local animals whose lives we’ve affected,” Dolittle said, “It is heartwarming, even coming from cold-blooded snakes”.
